Wildlife on Sylt

Sylt is an island full of unique nature and its inhabitants are almost nowhere else to be seen. The wildlife on Sylt stretches from land to high in the air and into the depths of the North Sea.

In the Sylt Wilderness

As lovers and admirers of marine life, you should take a boat trip to the sandbanks in front of Sylt during your stay with us. There are seals and seals for sunbathing especially when the sun is shining.

Porpoises are also often spotted off the coasts of Sylt. The beautiful two-metre mammals of the seas enjoy the tides of the North Sea. Did you know that the first whale sanctuary in Europe was established around our beautiful island in 1999?

The island is also a proud seabird sanctuary. On the one hand, the island is popular with migratory birds for resting, and on the other hand, Sylt is home to numerous species of birds that you should watch. As examples we can name the Gannet, the Star Diver, the Pied Avocet and the Oystercatcher - a true dream for ornithologists.

In addition, we also have animal workers on Sylt who ensure that the dikes are kept. Wherever you look, they run around in small groups on the green areas - our Sylt sheep.

Sylt Aquarium

If you miss even more fish and information about them, please visit the Sylt Aquarium. Fish from the tropics meet local fish from the North Sea. In a total of 25 basins with more than 1 million litres of seawater you can see more than 1,000 inhabitants of the seas. A real highlight is the 20-metre-long panorama tunnel through which you can walk. Close to the sea, the Sylt Aquarium offers its inhabitants a natural environment.
